WORCESTERSHIRE SOLDIER AT THE COMMANDERY
All Members
The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association Please could I ask for your support for a very exciting initiative taking place in Worcester, which is the creation of the “Worcestershire Soldier at the Commandery”. Museums Worcestershire will work in partnership with The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum Trusts to join their collections and stories from 1694 to the present day with the existing Civil War display. It will offer the opportunity to understand the contribution soldiers from the county have made to international, national and local military and social history in more than 300 years. Over 130,000 men served in the Regiments of Worcestershire in World War 1 with over 10,000 paying the ultimate sacrifice. Many thousands more served in World War 2 and in subsequent wars, operations and deployments from Malaya, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq as well as on United Nations operations in Cyprus and Bosnia. Their service represents a very proud and important part of Worcestershire’s heritage. Perhaps you and your friends had relatives who are part of this rich history? This display will pay homage to their service, courage and sense of duty. It is important that we and future generations never forget these soldiers and this museum will help us to remember them all. This will greatly enhance the iconic building’s tourist appeal in the historic part of the City. By using its educational capabilities it will be a place to which young and old alike can come to learn and study. It is expected that the overall costs of this project will be in the region of £1,200,000. Worcester City Council have designated £175,000 from central government’s post-Covid Towns Fund and the two charities have committed £105,000. The National Heritage Lottery Fund have agreed to a £243,200 development grant. So we have already identified £523,200 funds towards the cost. The remainder of the costs will need to be raised from grant making trusts, individual and corporate donations. We shall also be seeking a follow-on delivery grant from the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Please could you to consider supporting this excellent project in a number of ways: First, as a private individual with a Gift Aided donation. Secondly, be an advocate to support of the project. Thirdly, you may be aware of any corporate bodies that might consider sponsoring one of the new exhibition cases? Display cases will have a QR code to enable visitors to self-guide using their mobile phones. Descriptions of the case selected will start with “Welcome to Display case Number … sponsored by …” We would particularly welcome a case funded by the Regimental Association. To benefit from this publicity sponsorship of a case will cost £10,000.
Please could you consider contributing to this excellent project? Donations can be made to: Account Name: Worcestershire Soldier at the Commandery
Sort code: 30-99-50 Account number: 33306868
Thank you very much for your support.

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY POSTED 27TH MAY 2017
http://www.rjah.nhs.uk/Our-Services/Orthopaedic-Surgery/Veterans-Clinic.aspx
I thought maybe one or more of our Worcester branch members might be interested to know about and to hear about my experience regarding The Veterans Clinic (see attachment). For nearly two years I have suffered with severe Arthritis in my right knee, in October 2016 I had xrays at Malvern hospital, In January this year I had an appointment with surgeon Mr Nadim Aslam at Malvern hospital,
He studied the xrays, agreed that the knee was bad, but warned me that the waiting list in Worcestershire for a Knee replacement would be "at least a year". I considered going to Spire South Bank and spending £12,000 having the replacement done privately.
In February, at "Bomber" Knowles funeral, when Lt.Col.John Lowles saw me walking with a stick, he ask me what the trouble was,
I explained, told him I was considering South Bank and he told me about the Veterans Clinic at Oswestry. A week or so later I search the internet and found details (attached).
I phoned 01691 404344 and left a message for secretary Rebecca Jones, she phoned back on Feb 22nd and suggested I should ask my G.P. to send a referral letter, which he did.
On April 13th I had my first appointment with Lt.Col. Carl Meyers, within 5 minutes of booking in at reception I was taken to xray where 7 pictures were taken. About 3/4 of an hour later I met Col. Meyers,(who was in full uniform), we spent more than 1/2 hour talking about my knee and what he was going to do during the operation.
I now have a date, 5th May for the pre-operative assessment and a date, 21st June for the operation. I realise that Oswestry is a long way from Worcester, 75 miles, but I cannot speak too highly about the way I have been treated so far by the staff at Oswestry, also if one considers that from my first contact with the Veterans clinic In mid-February, to the operation in late June (four month), not only is that better than waiting another year to have the op. in Worcester or Redditch, but I have also saved £12,000 pounds.
Colonel Meyers is eager to keep the Veterans Clinic going which is why he asked me to tell anyone that has served in the military, And who requires Knee or Hip surgery to get in contact. If any member is interested and would like to talk further they can phone me on 01684 562102.
Very best regards Fred Orme

FREDS FOLLOW UP LETTER POSTED 18th JULY 2017
Veterans Clinic
It is now three and a half weeks since my right knee replacement and all is proceeding at quite a pace, I have been walking with first two arm crutches and for the past week using only one.
To recap. on my adventure, I was told about a Lt. Col. Carl Meyer a serving officer in the R.A.M.C. who runs a part time Veterans Clinic at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital at Oswestry.
In March of this year I phoned the Colonel's secretary, my G.P. sent a referral letter, in early April I had a first interview, in May I had a pre-operative assessment and on the 21 of June I had a full knee replacement operation.
During the assessment I chose to have a Spinal injection instead of a full anaesthetic, I was glad I did because there was no after effects and I was able to know about everything that was going on during the op.
On the morning of the op. I arrived at the hospital at 7.15am and at 7.30am was taken to a preparation room where I removed all clothing(except for underpants) and jewellery and put on the famous "hospital robe" (back to front), all my belongings were placed in a plastic container and taken to my room, having disposed of my watch I lost track of time, but about half hour later I was taken into the theatre, the anaesthetist (Neil) sprayed something on my back and then injected the anaesthetic into my spine, I was then laid out, not completely flat, a screen was placed across my waist, Col. Meyer came into the room and had a chat before starting the operation.
During the whole procedure I did not feel any discomfort what so ever, but I could judge and hear when the sawing took place and when the new joint was hammered into place, also throughout the op. either the anaesthetist or the Col. took the trouble to talk to me and to be sure that I was alright.
After the op. I was taken to my room where I was spoilt rotten by all the nurses and a young female physio.
Throughout the whole four day experience everyone from The Col. and his staff and both the day and night nursing staff were so professional, attentive and so very friendly.
If anyone is suffering with knee or hip joints and, like me, was waiting for a NHS operation date (eighteen months), then contact Colonel Meyer, I know Oswestry is a long way from Worcester but the effort is well worth while.
If anyone wants further information, please feel free to phone me on
