2nd June 2019

It is with regret the we inform you that 14420659 Pte William (Bill) Wilson Edwardes BEM Ld'H passed away on 6 May 2019.
Bill was born on the 7 November 1926 in Islington, North London. When war broke out at the age of thirteen and a half he was evacuated out of London to Staines then South Wales. Missing home he returned to London and started working in an armaments factory making parts for anit aircraft guns. On hearing his friend say he was joining up he thought he would go along with him and join up, only being sixteen and a half he told the recruiting team he was 18 and got away with it. He took the 'Kings Shilling' and spent it on the way home on a packet of Woodbines. Later in life he fronted a TV Documentary on those who joined up illegally and under age!
After basic training he was enlisted into the Queens own Royal Kent Regiment and then the 7th Hampshires at Bexhill West sussex. He was then posted to the 1stBattalion the Worcestershire Regiment who were in the 43rd Wessex Division training for the invasion of Normandy. Receiving an injury that hospitalised him for several weeks he was going be sent onto another unit but insisted his future was with the Worcesters. He was told that he could only go back to the Worcesters if he trained as a stretcher bearer/medic. So started a six weeks crash course before his return.
Bill was in the advance party of his Battalion landing in Normandy, which they did after D Day, Bill was still only seventeen years old! All Units of this Division landed at Courcelles -sur-Mer by the 24 June, then proceeded to a concentration area near Bayeux. In no time they were in action following up the 15th Scottish Div into the village of Cheux, clearing Germans out of Mouen, Baron and other villages on the line of the river Odon. Their first real test was 'Hill 112' a very strategic feature for Hitler and Rommel`s plans, there was much bitter hand to hand fighting being up against crack SS troops and SS Panzer Divisions. Their first assault was not successful but the second was, led by 5th Btt DCLI who took and held the feature, then commanded by Major (later Lt Col) George Taylor of the Worcesters. Casualties and workload of stretcher bearers during this period was very high. The Worcesters had made attacks on the crest of Hill 112. The Division including Bill then took Mt Pincon. After the Falais Pocket the 43rd Wessex Div forced a crossing of the Seine at Vernon. Then Operation Market Garden at Arnhem and finally the capture of Bremen in May 1945. Bill was invalided out later that year. He told of his experiences and being very afraid when everyone was taking cover from the hail of fire and having to leave his slit trench when the shout for stretcher or medic was shouted for.
After much necessary R&R Bill joined the British Gas Corporation in Bristol in 1969, retiring as head of Public Relations in 1991.
In 1994, together with other war veterans he established the 43rd Wessex Association. It`s aims were clear; a focal point for Veterans of the old 43rd Wessex Division, the arrangements for pilgrimages to Normandy and maintenance of relevant Memorials both in England and France. The Wessex Association at one point had over 500 members on their books. He organised various returns to France and the places that the Wessex Division had fought. Becoming well known to the Wessex Association Patron, Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex.
In the year 2000, Bill and Worcester Branch members Dave Plant and the late Stan Berrow took a one ton boulder of Malvern granite at their own expense to the site of a heated battle that the Worcesters fought with a German tiger tank, that has become known as the 'Worcesters Layby' the Boulder has two brass plaques one in English and one in French was unveiled in 2000 in a moving Ceremony with Bill carrying the Wessex Standard and Dave carrying the Worcestershire Regiments Standard. The British entourage was well feted by the thankful French people of Vernon and Vernonette.
Bill was clearly the focal point and driving force behind the Wessex Association, he became Secretary and the very last Chairman. He saw to it that the Wessex Association Standard was laid up in Exeter Cathedral in 2015 and it now hangs beside to the Divisional Roll of Honour.
During this time, Bill became involved in the establishment of a corresponding Association in Normandy, L`Association ODON-COTE112. This French Association has its members drawn from the communes around Hill 112, the scene of the epic battle in 1944. Relationships have remained strong over the years to the extent that veterans and their families, associated with the 43rd Wessex Association are invited every five years to join the French in celebrating that famous victory on hill 112; ironically the 75th Anniversary celebrations will be held this year on 7 July, 2 months after Bills death.
In 2013, bill was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Years Honours List for his charity work in the local community of Chandlers Ford and for his outstanding contribution to the 43rd Wessex Association. Subsequently, he was also presented with the Legion D`Honneur at an appropriate ceremony in the D Day Museum in Portsmouth.
He is survived by his wife Jean, three sons and a grand daughter
A funeral service of thanksgiving and celebration for the life of Bill Edwardes was held at St Martin in the Wood Church at Chandlers Ford, Hampshire on the 22 May 2019. Worcester Branch represented the Association with two Worcestershire Regiments Standards, (one carried by Dave Plant) and bugler. Representatives of the Mercian Regiment were in attendance as was the Equerry for Prince Edward Earl of Wessex.
Letters of Condolence can be sent to Bills Widow :-
Mrs Jean Edwardes, 141. Kingsway, Hocombe Road, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Hants SO53  5BX.

On call up for National Service in 1950 he arrived in TA uniform to be told he was now in the Royal Artillery and had to stitch on new shoulder titles and badges. His first posting was to Malta. Later recalling the damage that was there from the island`s hold out against the Axis forces. Whilst serving in the T.A. Before enlisting, Maurice`s civilian employment was fixing typewriters and was pigeon holed into that when he reported for duty in Malta being promoted to L/Bdr in RHQ. In Malta Maurice rowed and sailed for the Army Team and played cricket, hockey and football for the RA Regiment.
After National Service in 1952 Maurice resumed serving in the 7th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment, serving at different locations in Worcestershire. Maurice joined Worcester Branch W.F.R.A. In 2010 and became Secretary soon after. He was very efficient in the Secretarial role and the organising of different parades, working closely with Worcester City Council on getting the necessary procedures sorted. 1st December 2017

It is with sadness we inform you that Worcester Branch member 1478325 LCpl Eric 'Tip' TIPPING of Worcester died on Thursday 23 November 2017 following a struggle against cancer.  Born in Worcester on 1st January 1926, his first job, at the age of 14 years, was at a local foundry. He moved on to become a milkman’s assistant before working at the Co-operative Grocery store.  Eric Tipping was 16 years old when talk began of an invasion of England by Germany. He pretended he was 17 so he could join the Royal Air Force but he was foiled when he went for the interview. Eric had to wait a further period before being eligible at 18 and went to Norton Barracks in December 1943. After the 6 weeks training he became an infantryman with the Worcestershire Regiment. He travelled to join the 1st Worcesters on the front line in Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion of France, landing at Arromanches.  Eric became involved in every action of the Battalion for the rest of the 1944-1945 campaign in North Western Europe. He fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After being called back after only three days of seven days leave, moved with 1st Battalion serving in Italy and Yugoslavia, before finishing in Trieste, Italy where he was demobbed.  One particular story Eric recounted was when he managed to capture a German soldier. His reward for his actions was to retain and operate the German soldier’s Schmeisser submachine gun and Luger pistol, both of which he gave to his platoon colleagues after the war. He was proud to be part of the British 43rd (Wessex) Division.

After his discharge in 1947 Eric returned to Worcester and continued to work for the Co-op which he did for a period of 51 years, before reaching retirement.  At the age of 90 years on 26 January 2016, Eric was awarded the distinguished award, the National Order of the Legion of Honour, by the French Consulate at the Guildhall, Worcester. Eric`s funeral will be held at 1415 hours on Friday 15 December 2017 at St Mark’s Church, Orchard Street, off Bath Road, Worcester, WR5 3DW. Standards, bugle and Association members welcome. Funeral of a former Mayor of Derby and Burma Veteran.

Norman Glen was a former Mayor of Derby 1982/83, a Conservative Councillor and was aged 95 when he passed away recently.  His funeral will be held on Monday 4 December, in the Small Chapel at Markeaton Crematorium, Markeaton Lane, Derby at 1.40 pm.  He was a Burma Veteran and his wife died 8 years ago, so at best there will only be a handful of people at the funeral – if that.  The Mayor – Cllr John Whitby will attend and the information has been sent out to all Councillors. I just wondered if any Burma Veterans or Association Members could spare the time to go along for the service, which will possibly only be for a short while.

Kind regards

Collette

Collette Flood | Mayor's Officer

It is with regret that we inform you that 23702698 Bdsm Ron BUBB of Kidderminster died on 3 July 2017 aged 89.  Ron served with 7th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment as a trombonist in the Band after a career with 10th Hussars as Band Sergeant.

For many years he was employed at the Sugar Beet factory in Kidderminster when it was functioning including during the WW2 years when he was in the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) there.  When the Branch Bugler had to relinquish his post on health grounds the Branch handed back our Regiment's historic bugle to the Museum and bought for him a Ceremonial Bugle which later Ron took into charge and played at appropriate events, wearing his Bandsman's cape and white gloves which went well with his tall military bearing.

He was an observant and frequent correspondent on matters related to his interests using an old ribbon typewriter.   Upon our realising the breadth of his interests we made him the Kidderminster WFRA Branch Research Officer and he duly found out items of local military interest which the Branch acted upon whenever possible.  He had a quiet, unassuming, capable, imperturbable manner but was full of amusing anecdotes of remembered people/occasions which he would delightfully and mischievously drop into relevant conversation

The Funeral Service will be followed by a private Burial Service in Kidderminster Old Cemetery at 3.15pm (gate, junction of Park Lane and Castle Road, near The Castle PH, will be opened for the event) to which only family and close friends are invited.  The grave is on upward sloping ground to the Right of the entrance road close to a prominent obelisk about 15 feet high and about 100yards from the gate.  There is some parking space near to the Old Chapel (closed) 50 yds further up, also convenient for turning.

The WFRA KD Br Bugler will be required at the Burial Service together with the Standards of WFRA KD Br,  MVRA KD Br, TRBL KD Br and the Police Federation (West Mercia).   Car sharing is advocated to and from the Cemetery for avoidance of parking problems there.
